Inyanga Marine Energy Group Acquires First Grid-Connected Tidal Turbine in France

Inyanga Marine Energy Group has announced its acquisition of the D10 tidal turbine, which is France’s first grid-connected tidal turbine, initially deployed in 2015. Located in the Fromveur Passage off Brittany’s coast, the turbine generates clean energy for the island of Ushant.

Previously owned by the now-liquidated French company Sabella, Inyanga has secured the rights to operate the turbine until August 2028. The UK-based company has managed offshore operations at the D10 site since 2016.

Diane Dhomé from Inyanga stated that all necessary permits have been renewed, expressing gratitude for the support from the Brittany Region and French authorities in advancing renewable tidal energy. The D10 turbine has seen various efficiency upgrades and operates at a depth of 55 meters, measuring 17 meters high and 10 meters in diameter, capable of producing up to 250 kW of electricity.

Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga, expressed sadness over Sabella’s bankruptcy but is pleased with the successful takeover, emphasizing community support for the turbine. The Fromveur Passage is known for having France’s second strongest tidal currents.

Antonio A. Ver, Chairman of San Bernardino Ocean Power Corp., visited Ushant in January 2018. As far back that time, he wrote: “If Ushant were to Fromveur de Passage, Capul is to San Bernardino strait.” Perhaps, serendipity has it that Inyanga hitherto is the qualified Engineering-Procurement-Contractor for the first-mover Tidal Stream Energy project in the Philippines?
