ASEAN’s Net Zero Pathways by 2050: A Unified Decarbonisation Effort

ASEAN’s Net Zero Pathways by 2050: A Unified Decarbonisation Effort

The road to Net Zero by 2050 is far from a smooth, well-paved highway. For ASEAN, it is a complex network of pathways — each shaped by the unique economic realities, energy resources and infrastructure of its member states. This diversity underscores the need for a unified and coordinated decarbonisation effort to effectively combat climate change across the region.

Based on research up to 2024, ASEAN member states are pursuing varied energy transition strategies, with some also exploring nuclear energy as part of a sustainable energy mix. According to the IEA Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2024, eight ASEAN member states have set net zero targets — Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Singapore and Viet Nam by 2050; Indonesia by 2060; and Thailand by 2065. While progress is gaining momentum, significantly greater efforts are required to stay on track, including cutting today’s emissions by almost two-thirds by 2050.

Discover a snapshot of the energy transition strategies and plans of ASEAN member states — along with insightful perspectives on today’s evolving energy landscape — in the latest issue of Energy Malaysia, Volume 27 | 2025.
