Ilocos Norte Launches Bislak River Restoration Project to Mitigate Flooding

ILOCOS NORTE – The Bislak River Restoration Project was officially launched on November 22, 2023 on the dried river bed of the Bislak River in Ilocos Norte. The project is an initiative of Governor Matthew Manotoc in cooperation with the local government units of the municipalities of Bacarra and Vintar, the Inter-Agency Committee of the province of Ilocos Norte composed of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, DENR, Environmental Management Bureau, Mines and Geosciences Bureau, DPWH and private companies Harbor Star and EnergiesPH. The dredging and river restoration efforts aim to eliminate accumulated debris and holds the potential to rejuvenate the waterway to its original depth and condition, serving as a preventive measure against floods. This process also rids the area of dead vegetation, pollutants, and accumulated trash. The Bislak river serves as an important waterway and source of livelihood for the rice-producing municipalities of Vintar and Bacarra. The continuous onslaught of typhoons resulted in substantial sediment buildup and flooding in Bislak, adversely impacting the residents of Ilocos Norte and neighboring areas. Thus, the project is expected to mitigate the effects of perennial flooding and improve the lives of the residents of Vintar, Bacarra and the entirety of Ilocos Norte.
